Tony's XV750 Virago
The XV750 Virago was the first V-twin cruiser produced by Yamaha in 1981.
By 1984, Harley Davidson, fearful of competition from the new Japanese cruiser-style motorcycles, pushed for a tariff on imported bikes over 700 cc. Yamaha replaced the 750 cc motor with 699 cc version to avoid the tariff. (The 920 cc engine grew to 1000 cc, and later 1100 cc.) Tony recently brought this Red 1995 model and has spent a great deal of time restoring it, though he hasn't finished it yet.
"Thanks to Porky, I bought my Virago XV750 from Ashford in fairly good condition but was not content, so I ripped off all the chrome bits that were looking a little tatty and had them re chromed by Ian at Swan Plating Ltd, a guy I would highly recommend and a biker himself."
"Other than that, it was an endless task of replacing all the nuts and bolts with stainless ones and I still haven't finished yet, just had to get out and ride the beast. I have also replaced the leather bits - and indicators for all chrome ones, added a cigar lighter in the tool box with live feeds to charge the sat nav and any other accessories. I sourced the chrome side covers on Ebay from the States at a really good price and the headlamp cowl and rim kindly from Jono. I intend to carry on with these refurbs shortly but in the meantime just get out there and have some fun on the old girl while the sun is still shines".
Hear-hear Tony - winter will be here all to quickly!
